ASPI USA is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization in Washington, DC dedicated to addressing policy challenges facing the United States, Australia, and their partners in a rapidly changing world.

ASPI USA is an overseas affiliate of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, Australia’s leading national security and defense think tank.

ASPI USA exists to pressure test policy, to shine light into the gaps in national security and defense, to educate the public on Australian and regional perspectives within an evolving geopolitical landscape, and to explore future problems through original research and impactful collaboration with other experts in the field.

ASPI USA is a tax-exempt public charity under US Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3). US-based donors to ASPI USA can deduct contributions they make under IRC Section 170.

Areas of Research

Alliance Strategy

The Alliance Strategy line of effort focuses on deterrence, security partnerships such as AUKUS and the Quad, and unconventional challenges including terrorism and hybrid warfare in the Indo-Pacific, bringing a uniquely Australian perspective. By fostering dialogue across these dynamic networks of allies and partners, we pressure test ideas and policies to identify how decisionmakers can strengthen relations and capabilities, capitalize on opportunities, and manage shared challenges.

Regional Cooperation and Coordination

The Regional Cooperation and Coordination line of effort examines mutual opportunities and challenges for the United States, Australia, and regional partners with a particular focus on Southeast Asian and Pacific Islander relationships and perspectives. We analyze how security interests and concerns align across these countries and across states in other regions in support of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, ensuring regional perspectives inform policy discussions in both Washington and Canberra.

Economic Strategy

The Economic Strategy line of effort endeavors to better understand the effects economic levers have on geostrategic competition, primarily in the Indo-Pacific. We review and drill into how Indo-Pacific powers are wielding economic statecraft and coercion and building economic deterrence in this period of dynamic change, and highlight opportunities for the private sector. By facilitating connections and understanding between policymakers, academics, entrepreneurs and businesses, we seed new thinking, assess threats, and recommend risk mitigations for stability and prosperity.
